Our History
Professionals Fouways Real Estate commenced business some 57 years ago, when Reg Slade opened up 3 doors down from the current location. In those early days it was just Reg and his secretary, Mrs Buller, until Reg’s son David joined the small but thriving business in 1963. Additional salespeople were gradually added to the team, including Pat Bartholemew, one of the first female agents in Timaru, who remained with the company for over 35 years.
The family business has matured with David’s son Carl, now director, joining in the early 90s. Carl’s visionary approach has lead to a major change in business strategy, and the current winning selling system being adopted.
The Present
Today Professionals employ a small but highly effective team, based in our Church Street office, which we will continue to grow with the right people.
We have implemented the best real estate systems available. The underlying culture of the business is that our clients must, and will be, looked after to the very best of our ability. They must not lose money as a result of our inability to perform our duty; and ethics, integrity, trust and character form the culture our company is built on.
Our aim is 100% client satisfaction, and until we reach that level, our commitment to growing and learning will never stop.
Our surveys show that we are meeting and in many cases exceeding the expectations of our clients.

Our team is made up of administrative staff, support staff and of course salespeople. Every team member is as important as the next, and a true team feeling is shared by all. There is a real sense of group purpose and direction, and everyone ensures they perform their role to the maximum level to ensure the overall company objective is obtained.
The real estate industry has developed many systems and srategies which are designed to “condition” sellers into accepting a sale quickly, sometimes at less than the best price available if the agents were prepared to persevere for a longer period of time.
Overquoting to sellers and underquoting to buyers through the use of bait pricing and price ranges has done a great deal of damage to the reputation of real estate agents.
There are multiple techniques used to manipulate buyers and sellers.
At Professionals, we will not convince a seller to do anything the seller is uncomfortable or unesay with. If we are to be perfectly ethical in our dealings with clients, then educating them on the sale process and protecting them from techniques and strategies which may harm the value of their asset, no matter how effective for the agent, is the only way to serve them well. Ensuring the position of the seller is always safe and not vulnerable is of primary importance to our team.
Simply knowing that our culture does not allow such practices has allowed us to recruit high quality staff who would not have joined this industry had they have had to use unethical practices.
The standard industry model to growth is simply to have the biggest sales team. We know that by following this model we could very quickly become the largest office and by sheer weight of numbers grow our market share. However, our goal is not to be the biggest – it is to be the best.
We are looking for exceptional people to help us achieve our vision. So instead of making it easy to join our team we are going to take more care.
Firstly, we are going to do everything possible to make sure you are personally suited to our industry (so that you don’t waste six months of your life in the wrong career).

The Recruitment Process
A Summary of the Process
The entire recruitment process can take approximately three months, and this gives both you, and us, plenty of time to decide.
Initially, after a brief telephone interview, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire and return it to this office.
If the results of the questionnaire are satisfactory, and show us that a career in real estate may be the right choice for you, you will be advised of a time for an initial 30 minute interview. This will enable us to get an initial feel of whether this may be a suitable career choice for you.
If successful, you will be invited to call us back and arrange for a second, more in-depth interview. If we feel our program will suit you, you will be provided with an audio program called “Beginner to Winner”. This will give you a good indication of what is expected of you to be successful in being selected as a salesperson.
Following a further interview, you will be asked to study the sales program “Winning ways – Real Estate Sales”, on which you will be examined.
If you are successful in the exam, the next step is a four-day practical assessment. This will involve “hands-on” tasks - door-knocking and telephone calls, which will give you, and us, a good indication of whether of not you will be suited to performing these tasks on a daily basis as you begin your career.
Finally, if you do qualify, there will be a three-month trial period before a permanent decision is made.
A winning team is the most important element in a successful agency. This recruitment process has been proven time and again to find the winners.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, our hiring process is designed to give you a good opportunity to decide whether we are right for you, as much as whether you are right for us.

It is important that you know as much as possible about a future in Real Estate. The following are some vital points to take into account:

The Hours
You must be prepared to work many hours, particularly in the early months. You will also be required to work many weekends. The Real Estate Agency Management Program requires an enormous amount of dedication. A mastery of time management skills is therefore critical.
Spouse Support
You will need the whole-hearted support of your family. Real estate can be very demanding on your family life. Family bonds need to be strong to be able to withstand such pressure. By focussing on the ultimate benefits of a successful real estate career, a family feels part of a team.
Your Image
With many real estate agents suffering from a poor public image, you will need the ability to separate yourself from this perception. It will take some time to earn respect in your community. The Real Estate Agency Management Program is based solely on putting the client first. Following the program will quickly enable you to win the respect of your clients.
Training
The most successful people are constantly improving. You will need to devote yourself to continuous training and improvement.
Selling
In real estate, the ‘sale’ is not so much when someone decides to purchase a property. The true ‘sale’ is when a person grants you the right to represent them as their agent for the sale of their property. What you ‘sell’ is yourself, your agency, and the benefits your agency can provide to the seller. The sellers are your clients and their interests are of paramount importance.
By remembering this principle and practising a policy of total client care, you will receive many recommendations. The better you care for your clients, the more successful your career will be. A struggling real estate agent is often a real estate agent who has neglected clients.
The programs you will be taught eliminate all methods that place agent interests ahead of clients’ interests.
The philosophy of ‘Client Benefit Strategies’ is taught in your pre-start training programs. These strategies will make you very proud of your profession.
We are always Open for Hiring
If you have made attempts to enter the real estate Industry in the past, you may have met with the response “We don’t need anyone right now”. This statement is likely to have been made by real estate offices in which the managers have become adverse to the “traditional” hiring methods.
With a high proportion of new recruits entering the industry failing, and with many experienced people having developed bad practices, it is not surprising that real estate managers in general are sceptical about hiring new team members.
However, agencies using the Real Estate Agency Management Program are always open for hiring. Recruitment is on-going. If you are considering real estate as a career now, or at some time in the future, we will always be happy to talk with you.
